Working on a holiday is time-and-a-half

I’ve been asked about how I structure my days, what my calendar looks like, when I work and all that jazz. To tell you the truth, I work the oddest hours.  That includes late nights (after the family has gone to bed); early Saturday mornings (while their still asleep); and yes, even holidays.

“Why?” you ask.

The answer is simple: It’s quiet.

And by quiet I mean: the phone is not ringing, emails are slow, only my die-hard friends are tweeting :)

I can focus with minimal distractions. And I love it!

This morning is a perfect example. While everyone is offline enjoying that paid-day-to-do-nothing, I’m here plugging away and getting those “I never have time for you projects” done. (Heck – I even wrote a blog post!)

So for me, holidays are time-and-a-half, because it seems like I get a day-and-a-half worth of stuff done!

And who doesn’t love THAT?

Holidays are for people who don't like what they do.

Outside of family commitments, I look at those special days as the best time to avoid anything most people do, and just keep doing what I love.

If you can tell the difference between work and play, you aren't doing one of them right.

and by “die-hard friends” I mean you. :)

I was doing the same this weekend! With the exception of “most” of Saturday (due to a wedding) I was still tweeting and catching up on projects. I even made a to-do list last night to prepare myself for a structured Monday…something I rarely take the time to do! (And mind you, that was in between roasting s'mores and watching fireworks with the fam.)

My nights typically go until about 1:30 to 2:00am since the house only gets quiet at 11:30pm or so. I sleep until about 9 most mornings because I know everyone will be gone to work or outside by then. It may sound like I sleep in to most people, but if it's quiet, I'm going to get a lot more done.

Keep up the great work Kate…you're an inspiration! :)

Holidays are a great time to do the work for clients who have lower expectations of you regarding deadlines vs. the ones who have higher expectations. Tell all the high-expectation clients you're taking the vacation day and catch up on everyone else.

C'mon… you know I speak the truth! :-)

Even do something we love need a day off. For me I take less holiday as possible.. but once I get holiday I will shut everything from internet, email, phone etc that might make we think about job.

Absolutely! My favorite week is the one between Christmas and New Year’s! Those of us who are self-employed can accomplish a month’s worth of “backburnered” items in that time. Lovin’ it!!
